FAQ
Does the meter spin backward?
Usually no. Plug-in balcony kits offset what you buy while the sun is up. They’re not classic net metering. Size to daytime use.
Will it work in a blackout?
No—not by itself. Safety rules shut the inverter off when the grid is down. Backup needs a separate battery/hybrid setup.
What about winter and snow?
Shorter days and snow cover cut production. Brush snow off when it’s safe; expect summer to do more of the heavy lifting.
Do I need a permit?
Portable-scale plug-in systems are designed to stay inside Colorado’s simplified rules—but local HOA/landlord rules still apply. Ask us about your situation.

How the tech cuts your bill
For the more technical: plug-in balcony solar doesn’t “spin the meter backward” like classic net metering. It lowers what you buy from the utility while the sun is up.
- Panels make DC. Sunlight hits the modules; they produce direct current proportional to irradiance and panel size.
- Microinverter makes AC. A UL-listed inverter converts that DC to 120V AC that matches your home’s wiring—and includes anti-islanding so it shuts off if the grid goes down.
- You plug into an outlet. The AC feeds the same branch circuit as that receptacle. Your house loads (fridge, Wi‑Fi, lights, whatever’s on) draw from the nearest available source.
- Solar is used first. Electrons don’t “choose” a brand—physics does. Local generation on the circuit offsets load on that circuit in real time. Every watt the panels supply is a watt you don’t import through the utility meter at that moment.
- Bill drops with daytime kWh. Your utility charges for energy delivered through the meter. Lower imported kWh during sunny hours → lower usage charges. Excess that can’t be used on-site is typically limited/throttled (e.g. zero-export meter) rather than sold back—so size the kit to your daytime use.
